Montignac lies to the south east of Targon and straddles route D19 (Libourne–Langon).  Situated in a large valley with gently sloping hills, Montignac sits on the rise separating the Garonne and the Dordogne basins.  Although lacking rivers and streams, the village possesses a spring that was one believed to cure kidney, liver and eye problems.  In front of the Mairie’s office you will find a reproduction of a triangular Standing Stone, which will point you in the direction of this miraculous fountain.

The village dates back to prehistoric times, attested to by the numerous remains that can be found.

The Chapel that formed part of the original Priory still exists today.  It accommodates a  beautiful sculpture of Adam & Eve, a cut stone Communion Table, and, an Alter, which date back to the 11th Century.
